The Institute for Sport Coaching, in partnership with Smith College's
Department of Exercise and Sport Studies, is sponsoring the 1st Annual
Sport
Coach USA Training Center. The Sport Coach Training Center will offer a
two-
tiered menu of coaching education courses, general and sport specific, to
meet
the demand of all coaches ranging from volunteer youth to interscholastic
coaches in the New England and upstate New York area.
This year's course offerings include:
-
Coaching
Principles
Course: This ASEP course, a requirement for
interscholastic
coaches in Vermont, New Hampshire, Massachusetts and optional in
Maine, will
be offered July 14-15. The course challenges coaches to define who they
are as
coaches (their coaching philosophy, objectives, and style); enhance
communication and motivational skills; become more effective teachers and
trainers; and improve team, relationship, risk, and self-management skills.
- Sport Safety Training
Course: This course, designed in by the American
Red
Cross and
US Olympic Committee will be taught on July 16. Sport Safety Training is
designed to help coaches, athletic trainers and other participants identify
and
eliminate potentially hazardous conditions in various sports environments,
recognize emergencies and make appropriate decisions for first aid care.
The
course will also include CPR and AED training.
- Squash Coaching
Clinic: This clinic concentrates on the coaching skills
important to
teach the novice squash player. This course starts the evening of July 14
and
ends during the afternoon of July 16.
- Inside the Sport Coach
USA's Union: This exclusive offering will feature
three
distinguished coaches representing youth, interscholastic and
intercollegiate
sports, who will participate in a moderated panel discussion, combined
with
audience participation, leading to insightful and deep commentary on the
craft
of sport coaching.
