Coaching Education--Punishment for Bad Coaches?
The Florida HS Athletic Association is going to use mandatory coaches education as a punishment for coaches who demonstrate poor sportsmanship.

This is so wrong. Why not use coaches education as a means to prevent such behavior? Proactive policy vs. reactive?

Tossed Coaches Must Pass Class
By Roy Fuoco

After voting to reopen the search for a new executive director Sunday, the Florida High School Athletic Association board of directors took aim at promoting sportsmanship from high school coaches.

In its regular meeting Monday, the board voted to require coaches who are ejected because of unsportsmanlike conduct to complete an online course before being reinstated. That could keep coaches out longer than the current penalty calls for if they don't complete the course right away.

The course is the six-hour NFHS Fundamentals of Coaching, provided by the National Federation of State High School Associations.

Currently, coaches who are ejected are suspended for seven days and at least two contests (one for football). The length of the suspension could be longer depending on the severity of the behavior that prompted the ejection.

While a coach is suspended, he or she is allowed to conduct practice but cannot attend an event the team is playing or accompany the team to the event.

"Today's action sends a strong message to our coaches that the FHSAA board of directors holds them to a high standard when it comes to sportsmanship," FHSAA Executive Director John Stewart said in a news release. "Student-athletes model their behavior after that of their coaches. So, it is imperative that coaches exemplify sportsmanship in the way they conduct themselves during contests."

Schools will be required to pay the fee for the online course.
